Setting Occupational Exposure Limits: Are

چکیده

Setting limits for safe exposure to toxic agents in the workplace is a complex process involving science, law, and policy. Development and use of occupational exposure limits (OELs) transcends national interests and international borders. Even though OELs have a lengthy history, and they form the cornerstone of most occupational risk assessment and risk management plans, their effectiveness in protecting worker health is increasingly being questioned. To better understand the current state of the OEL-setting process both in the United States and internationally, we need to understand what OELs are; how they are used in the workplace; how OELs are developed and why there are so many different OEL-setting entities; how often they are updated; whether OELs are effective; and whether there are newer approaches which are more effective in protecting worker health than traditional ones that use OELs.

Setting occupational exposure limits for unstudied pharmaceutical intermediates using an in vitro parallelogram approach.

Occupational exposure limits for unstudied pharmaceutical synthetic intermediates are often established under the assumption that penultimate and near-ultimate intermediates have the same structure-activity and dose-response as the ultimate active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This is seldom the case because moieties that render biological activity to the API are often protected or modified ...

Upper limits for exceedance probabilities under the one-way random effects model.

In this article, we propose statistical methods for setting upper limits on (i) the probability that the mean exposure of an individual worker exceeds the occupational exposure limit (OEL) and (ii) the probability that the exposure of a worker exceeds the OEL. The proposed method for (i) is obtained using the generalized variable approach, and the one for (ii) is based on an approximate method ...

An Overview of Setting Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) for Pharmaceuticals

Introduction Occupational exposure limits (OELs) 1 for the protection of workers have been around at least since 1939 when the National (later changed to American) Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) published its inaugural acceptable workplace exposure limits (now known as threshold limit values, or TLVs). In 1970, the U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Act incorporated ...

New EMF safety limits for occupational and public exposure in Poland.

On July 23, 2001, new safety limits for occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) were introduced in Poland. The limits have been based on the analysis of international recommendations, e.g., ICNIRP (1998), WHO (1998), IEEE standard (1999), drafts of European standards (ENV 1995), and a critical review of the world literature on the biological effects of EMF and health effects of ex...
